More than 11 million U.S. homeowners don’t have home insurance, leaving about 1 in 7 homes unprotected in case of a disaster, according to a new study.
The analysis, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, highlights the impact of rapidly rising insurance premiums in recent years. Between 2020 and 2023, the average cost of home insurance jumped 33%, reaching $2,530 per year.
"The rising cost of home insurance is one more hurdle buyers have to clear to become homeowners," says Realtor.com senior economic research analyst Hannah Jones. "Today’s high-priced market means that many homebuyers are already at the top of their budget to afford a home."
