Be weather aware!! Another round of storms coming our way!

01/27/2026

The cold weather is still here!! Keep dripping your water and my newest tip is change your HVAC filter today if you haven’t done it within the last month. Your heater is working extra hard to keep your house warm. Do your part to help it out. Clogged filters will stop your heater from working….and this is not the time to wake up to a cold house!

Brrrr….it is going to be cold!! Great tips below!!

Plan Ahead So You Can Be Prepared!

Forecast: COLD!!

The Utility Maintenance Department would like to help residents prevent costly plumbing repairs and damage to their homes. Forecasted extremely cold temperatures and low wind chills can cause significant water issues. Following these tips may help prevent frozen or broken pipes:

*Prevent Frozen Pipes:
If you have experienced frozen pipes in the past, keep a small trickle of water running from the highest faucet in your home. During extremely cold periods, the trickle should be about the size of a pencil point. You will be billed for the water used, but this may help prevent more expensive plumbing repairs caused by burst pipes.

*Disconnect Garden Hoses:
Disconnect and drain all garden hoses. This helps prevent outside faucets and pipes from freezing, leaking, or breaking.

*Seal Out Cold Air:
Close outside vents, crawl spaces, and doors to prevent cold air from entering your home.

*Open Cabinet Doors:
If a sink is located against an outside wall, open cabinet doors overnight to allow warm air to circulate around water pipes.

*If Your Home Will Be Vacant:
If you plan to turn off the heat, drain all water from pipes, toilets, and the water heater. Turn off the power supply to the water heater. If the heater operates on gas, set it to “pilot.”

*Protect Exposed Pipes:
Wrap pipes that are exposed to cold or freezing temperatures with heat tape, available at most hardware stores. Heat tape must remain plugged in throughout the winter.

This is my yearly post about cold weather!!

Forecast-COLD!!

1. If you have had problems with frozen pipes in the past, keep a trickle of water running from the highest faucet in your house. During extremely cold periods, this trickle should be the size of a pencil point. You will be billed for the water used but this procedure may help prevent more costly plumbing repairs resulting from broken pipes.
2. Disconnect and drain the garden hose connection. This will help prevent outside faucets and pipes from freezing, leaking or breaking.
3. Close outside vents, crawl spaces and doors so cold air doesn’t seep inside.
4. If a sink is located against an outside wall, open the cabinet doors overnight to allow warm air to reach water pipes.

Thank you

It is the start of the rainy wet/grass growing season before we move into the hot hot season! So, take advantage of the non-rainy days to mow your lawn. Also, this is a great time to check your smoke alarms if you haven’t recently. Additionally, change your filter on your HVAC unit and make sure all your fans are running counter-clockwise for the summer. Closing blinds and curtains during the day will also keep the house cooler and using crockpots or smaller ovens like air fryers can also keep the heat out of the kitchen. This is also a good time to turn off the HVAC and spray out the outside unit. Keeping your unit clear of cottonwoods outside and clean filters inside can keep your electric bills up to 10% lower. Think about all the things your grandparents did to keep the house cooler before there was AC everywhere. Those things still help!

In typical Oklahoma fashion, we have gone from cold and wet to hot, hotter, and I am dying-it is so hot!! So here are some tips to help survive the heat if the Arctic Circle is not on your vacation list in the next few weeks.

1) Turn on your overhead fans and make sure they are running counterclockwise for summer!
2) Close your blind and drapes. Your grandma always did this-now you know why.
3) Clean or replace your HVAC filters. This really does help your unit run more efficiently and uses less energy.
4) Turn your HVAC off while mowing the grass. Then hose it down with a water hose spraying in then down. This time of year, the cottonwoods can really gunk up a filter.
5) Try to use a crockpot or eat meals that don’t use the oven, which in turn heats up the house.
6) Use the grill, not the oven if possible.
7) Keep hydrated with water.
😎 Wear sunglasses and a hat if you go outside-along with sunscreen.
9) If you have to work in the yard, the morning hours are the coolest.
10) Park in the shade if possible, use the windshield shade and pull up the shades if possible.
11) Go north for vacation!!
