The jetties we know today weren’t built overnight. In fact, it took five attempts and nearly 50 years to finally tame the ever-moving current.

Before the jetties, the pass was shifting south by as much as 200 feet per year, making it nearly impossible to maintain a seaport, or even build a town, along its banks. Local business owners, Army engineers, and private investors all attempted to control the channel, with each effort facing its own challenges.

Finally, in 1910, engineers completed the jetties that successfully captured the pass and brought an end to its southward migration. With a stable channel, Port Aransas could grow as a working seaport and coastal community.

And there’s one more important piece of history: that same year, the town changed its name from Tarpon to Port Aransas.

Today, the jetties are one of the most recognizable parts of Port A and a favorite spot for fishing, walking, watching ships, and taking in the Gulf.

💬 Have you ever fished from the jetties or watched a ship come through the channel? Tell us your favorite jetty memory!
