We're thrilled to announce that Mid-County Regional Library will reopen to the public on Monday, May 11!

All are invited to a formal grand reopening and ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11. Then stay to explore the building, check out the new collection, and enjoy photo ops, makerspace demonstrations, and activities. Attendees can also receive a commemmorative pin, free while supplies last.

The festivities continue on Saturday, May 16 at our all-day Community Celebration! Join us for refreshments, giveaways, tours, and activities for all ages, including special story times for our littlest patrons.

It's been a long road to recovery, and we can't wait to welcome you home to our county's main library as a new chapter begins!

Lovebug season is here Florida! It peaks in May with another round in September. I've already had dozens at my house!

They're called lovebugs because they're attached to each other so the male can prevent other males from mating with her. The female is in charge though and the larger of the two. Because she is bigger and stronger, she actually dictates where they fly, dragging the smaller male along for the ride.

The adult lifespan is only about 3 to 4 days and after they detach, the male dies almost immediately. They are attracted to highways and are drawn to the heat of the asphalt and the vibrations of cars, but mostly they are attracted to a vehicle's exhaust. If they get smashed on your windshield or bumper and are left to bake in the Florida sun, their acidic remains will literally etch into your car's clear coat and paint.

Lastly, no, they were not created in a lab. Urban legend. They came from Central America!

Today is the anniversary of a very important moment in the history of Southwest Florida. On this date in 1928, the Tamiami Trail opened, connecting Tampa to Miami. Barron Collier, the namesake of Collier County, even paid to help finish the road after the state ran out of money for the project. This arch was at the Collier/Miami-Dade County line.

This Saturday, April 25, 2026, is National Drug Takeback Day. The lobby of the Public Safety Building at 1410 Tamiami Trail will be staffed from 10 am to 2 pm with personnel from the Punta Gorda Police Department to assist you with disposing of unneeded or expired prescription medications. Proper disposal of prescription drugs keeps them out of the wrong hands and out of our water supply.
