Charlotte Harbor is the second largest bay in Florida. It is situated on the Gulf of Mexico coast of Southwest Florida. Most of Charlotte Harbor is in Charlotte County, FL and extends to Lee County. The entrance to the harbor is Gasparilla Island. The southern portion of this barrier island is Boca Grande which is a most magical waterfront town with beaches, lighthouses, beautiful tree lined streets, restaurants, delightful shops and such a great area to explore on a rented golf cart. There are also barrier islands only accessible by boat or ferry such as Palm Island. The harbor is such a pristine recreational harbor. Two rivers flow into the harbor: Myakka River and Peace River. Myakka River flows from Manatee & Sarasota Counties into Charlotte County into Charlotte Harbor. A favorite pastime is boating, fishing and cruising on this river into the harbor. Manatees & Dolphin are frequently spotted. The other river is the historic Peace River which flows southwest from Polk County, Hardee County, Desoto County and into Charlotte County. I was canoeing with a church youth group in Arcadia and met college students who were exploring the river and the fossils. Peace River is well known for its fossil finds. Charlotte County and are extraordinary waterways & harbor is a perfect destination to live, vacation and explore.
