Michigan fall color season is looking MUCH better this year!

After last year’s drought left a lot of trees turning brown and dropping early, forecasters are expecting a more normal — and much more colorful — fall across Michigan.

Here’s the estimated timeline:

🍂 Upper Peninsula: Colors begin mid-to-late September, with peak color from late September through mid-October.

🍂 Northern Lower Peninsula: Colors begin around September 28, with peak color around October 20.

🍂 Southern Michigan: Leaves should start changing around October 2, with peak color expected around October 29.

📍 Here in St. Clair County: We should start noticing the first changes in early October, but the best color will likely come mid-to-late October, with peak color toward the end of the month.

And because much of our area sits close to Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, some spots near the water may change a little later than areas farther inland. That lake effect helps hold onto warmer temperatures longer into the fall.

If you’re planning the classic fall drive north, heads up: portions of M-119’s Tunnel of Trees are currently closed following flood damage, with detours in place. Check road conditions before making the trip.

The recipe for great color? Sunny days, cool nights and steady rainfall. 🍁 Heavy wind and rain can bring the show to an early end.

And even after the maples fade, Michigan isn’t finished — tamaracks can keep the northern landscape glowing gold into early November.
