Every generation gets told to shut up and play. Every generation, somebody declines.

Jacksonville, 1964: the day after Hurricane Dora, ten weeks after the Civil Rights Act, in a city-owned stadium that still planned to seat Black fans separately.

Lennon: "We never play to segregated audiences and we aren't going to start now. I'd sooner lose our appearance money."

The next year they put it in writing — the 1965 contract says the group would "not be required to perform in front of a segregated audience."

McCartney, decades later: "To us it seemed like common sense."

Common sense has a lineage.

Dolly Parton wrote a labor anthem, advanced women’s rights, and when asked in 2020 whether Black lives matter, answered "of course" like the question was silly.

The art is the organizing.

Colin Kaepernick kneeled in 2016 and the league quietly agreed he'd never work again.

His book came out Tuesday. On The Daily Show last night he said the job is everyone's: "We have to push the bounds in fighting for each other."

Macklemore said "free Palestine" at MetLife two weeks ago.

Now, he's off the Ed Sheeran tour because the Patriots' owner rallied other stadium owners to shut their doors.

He’s giving his $1 million from the tour to Palestinian relief.

A stadium, a song, a knee, a stage.

The people who own the venues have always wanted the show without the point of view.

The artists worth remembering know better.
