𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄? Here's a piece of 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 history:

In 1854, when Volusia County split off from Orange County, the little St. Johns River steamboat port of Enterprise, not DeLand, was named the county's very first seat.

That same year, steamboat captain Jacob Brock opened his Brock House hotel on the riverfront there, turning Enterprise into a bustling tourist stop. It held the title until the county seat finally moved to DeLand in 1887.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄? Here's a piece of 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 history:

In 1902, railroad magnate Henry Flagler secretly financed a new science building at Stetson University in DeLand, insisting the university keep his $60,000 gift confidential because he feared other schools would come asking him for money too.

The secret held until after his death. In 1913, the university renamed the building Flagler Hall in his honor, and it still stands on campus today.

Rant of the day.

I went to a town hall on Amendment 3, the proposed tax amendment. In the room: the mayors of Port Orange, Daytona Beach Shores and South Daytona. A rep from Ponce Inlet. The county tax collector. The county property appraiser. Sheriff Chitwood.

Want to guess how many residents showed up? Fewer than 100.

There are over 90,000 people living in these cities. Fewer than 100 in the room. And the "official" YouTube stream? The most I saw watching at one time was 15.

Fifteen.

I see people all over the comments about this amendment and everything else. It strikes a chord with so many of you. Everybody has something to say. But when the people we elected sit down to talk about it, with a Q&A where you can ask them anything you want to their faces... nothing. Well, I wouldn’t say nothing… There were a few residents that showed their concerns, had questions, brought up tough topics that need to be addressed. But not what there should have been based on comments and posts I see in social media.

I went to learn what I could so I'd be ready when people ask me questions. I expected a full house. Standing room only. Nope.

I don't put my political views out there in the world. But I'm voting NO.

Want to know why? Ask me, I'm happy to share. Want to explain your side? Go for it. Disagree with me? Go for it. Just don't talk down to people, and don't make anyone feel stupid for their opinion.

But to be honest, if you couldn't show up to a simple town hall on the topic, I don't think you have much room to do any of that.
