I wasn't expecting or prepared to hear that Tom Alcorn passed away this weekend, and although it was obvious that he was having health issues, I didn't think it was Hospice critical.
A couple of months back, I gifted Tom an original copy of book written by Dr Andrew Turnbull because I thought that of anybody I could think of with a quirky variety of interests (who would actually read it!) and appreciate the historical significance and locale, it would be Tom.
We left that meeting early, so I never discussed or really thought about it after that. Sure enough, when he thanked me after a couple of meetings had passed there were tears in both of our eyes because of his genuine gratitude and appreciation of not only getting a book, but a thoughtful book that meant a lot to his interests.
The New Smyrna Beach Community and our Kiwanis club will have some huge empty shoes to fill (if that's even possible?). I wish I had gotten the chance to get to know Tom better, but the person I got to know was for better or worse; an authentic, sophisticated, eccentric, wonderful, charming character who an entire Community will be grieving over..including me.😢

It just doesn't get any better than this!
I got to spend the entire weekend with our new incoming Florida Kiwanis State Governor, Jeremy Riehl, and we're All-in to get a West Volusia Kiwanis Club started. So, of course we joined the DeLand and Greater West Volusia Chamber of Commerce yesterday. They extended an invitation for us to have a booth at their meeting to promote our Club so we could let the business community know of our intentions, and hopefully recruit some of their members.
After all, these are the movers & shakers of DeLand, and the entire West Volusia area. We were overwhelmed with the genuine support and caring people who were stepping up to help in their community and are proud to announce that we're at 80% of our goal to create a West Volusia Kiwanis Club Charter.
In Only One Weekend! How cool is that?!
We are blessed to have Christen Gandy spearheading our efforts and representing Kiwanis on the West Side. She is not only one of the most dynamic and productive people I know, but she's also one of the most caring and loving people on the planet.
Help Her, Help Us, Help Yourselves by joining our efforts for Kiwanis to re-engage with the West side, and do what's necessary to make the largest impact and help the most amount of people in your local community.
We're hosting a Get-to-Know Kiwanis Live Zoom call this Thursday morning, Sept 12th at 11 am with all of the future founding members who signed up at the Pioneer Settlement and the Chamber meeting asked to participate.
AND, we're inviting anyone else who loves their community and wants to participate in local events to raise money to assist those less fortunate families and children locally. The More, The Merrier1

Oh Happy Day! The 1st day of recruitment for a new West Volusia Kiwanis Club at the Barberville Pioneer Settlement's Fire & Ice Chili Cook-off and Ice Cream Social was a success! Several people were not only interested in becoming founding members but many had already had some experience with Kiwanis programs.
Our esteemed incoming Kiwanis Governor, Jeremy Riehl brought his delicious homemade Chili and inspirational attitude to the competition, The Pioneer Settlement was open to the Community to get an up-close and personal look at life in the early days of Florida's history. The beautiful grounds were splashed with colorful vendors offering everything from soy candles & quilts to lighted terrariums & Dan's Hot Sauce (The Sweet Habanero was my fave!)
Thanks to Christen from the Settlement for allowing us to participate and working with us to finally get registered.
The Daytona Beach Kiwanis has graciously helped sponsor the new Club's initial efforts as the organization reaches out into the west side of Volusia County to begin the club-building process.
Next Stop, the West Volusia Regional Chamber of Commerce on Monday to meet with local business owners. If you or anyone you know from DeLand, DeBary, Pierson, to Bunnell would like to participate and be active in your Community then please shoot me a message and we'll get you involved immediately.
