Do you have household waste like paint, batteries, cleaning chemicals, pesticides, pool chemicals or other hazardous materials ☣️ that you need to get rid of?

These materials cannot go in with your regular trash for curbside pickup, so dispose of them properly at a designated hazardous waste collection site.

This Saturday, Oct. 19, you can drop them off, free of charge, between 8 a.m. to noon during Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at the Public Works complex, 450 SW Thornhill Drive.

This biannual event is for Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County residents only. IDs will be checked.

The timeframe has already been adjusted to collect debris from the tornadoes that spawned from Hurricane Milton throughout the unincorporated areas of St. Lucie County.

Outside contractors began picking up debris following Hurricane Milton on Monday. Early estimates anticipate crews will need to remove more than 90,000 cubic yards of debris from unincorporated St. Lucie County due to the damage caused by tornadoes and strong winds from Hurricane Milton.

Contractors have separated the unincorporated area of St. Lucie County (outside city limits) into 15 zones. Starting with neighborhoods impacted the most, crews are scheduled to run a 10-truck operation working 11-hour shifts over the next two months. This schedule will be adjusted as more trucks/equipment/workforce become available.

Residents and businesses within the city limits of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie will need to contact their municipality for their debris removal schedule.

Residents and businesses are reminded that it is important to separate their storm debris into five categories:

1. Normal household trash: Your regular household waste and recyclables will not be collected with storm debris. Stick to your normal garbage removal schedule.

2. Vegetative debris: This includes vegetation such as leaves, logs, plants and tree branches. Do NOT put yard waste in bags.

3. Construction and demolition debris: This category includes cabinets, counters, doors, drywall, lumber, roofing, shingles, tile windows, wood siding and vanities.

4. Bulky Waste: Items such as carpet, furniture, mattresses, plastic/PVC pipe, privacy fencing, vinyl siding, and pressure-treated wood.

5. Appliances and white goods: This category includes air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators (remember to put food waste with household trash), stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters.

Residents are responsible for moving debris and separating it at the edge of your property near the road. Do not block the roadway or stormwater drains. Also, do not place debris under power lines and trees, or near poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants, utility boxes or other structures that can delay removal. Do not place debris on driveways or sidewalks. Remember, please do not mix household hazardous waste or electronics with other debris.

UPDATE: The precautionary boil water notice has been lifted, as the City’s water treatment plants and water distribution system did not experience any issues during the storm. Some lift stations run on generator power, and additional resources are sent to stations without power to ensure continual operation.

EARIER: Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department is issuing a precautionary boil water notice for water customers beginning tonight at 8 p.m.

This action is being taken in an abundance of caution to protect the health of our utilities customers.

The ground is already soft from recent heavy rains, combined with potential flooding, the threat of strong winds and downed trees, there is an increased possibility of damage to the system’s water mains. By boiling water as a precaution, customers will be protected in the case of potential water main breaks.

This precautionary action is being taken because of the changing severe weather conditions. There are no known compromises to the system at this time. Residents are encouraged to fill up containers with their tap water before 8 p.m. to ensure they have safe drinking water to use throughout the storm. Customers who plan to use any water for consumption after 8 p.m. tonight should boil water for at least two minutes prior to using.

Once the storm passes and facilities have been fully reviewed and approved for service, the precautionary boil water notice will be lifted.

Call 772-873-6400 regarding any issues with water or sewer service or visit www.cityofpsl.com/utility for more information regarding storm preparations. The Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department chat service has also been enabled and will be available 24/7 through the storm event.
