Meet Van Houten

Some real estate stories begin with a listing. This one began nearly a decade ago.

I first helped my client purchase her North Portland home in 2017 while working with the African American Housing Alliance. But our relationship didn’t end when she received the keys. Over the years, we stayed connected through coffee dates, handwritten note cards and life’s many changes.

Then, a house fire changed the home—but not the address or the memories created here.

Today, the original bones remain, but the house has been thoughtfully rebuilt. It is the same client and the same address, yet it feels like an entirely new home.

Now, she is ready for her next chapter, and I have the honor of helping her once again—this time as the seller of 9714 N Van Houten Avenue.

So, what does this mean for a buyer?

The new black garage door at 9714 N Van Houten Ave instantly gave this North Portland cottage a sharper, more modern look, while keeping its original 1950s charm.

This is only the beginning. More updates are underway as Van Houten gets ready for its next chapter.

Portland summer isn’t over just yet. 👀🌲

And if you’re anything like me, there are probably still a few things you meant to do before the long sunny days start giving way to fall.

So here’s my end-of-summer Portland bucket list for making the most of these last few weeks.

One more outdoor concert. One more patio dinner. A walk by the Willamette. A farmers market morning that somehow turns into a bag full of berries, flowers, and things you didn’t plan to buy.

Maybe a Forest Park hike, an afternoon on Sauvie Island, or a picnic at Mt. Tabor before we start reaching for rain jackets again.

That’s one of the things I love about living in Portland, Oregon. You don’t have to go far to turn an ordinary weekend into something memorable.

When the sun is out, eating inside almost feels like wasting it.

Try Tin Shed Garden Cafe for a laid-back brunch on Alberta, The Rambler for an easy evening on Mississippi, or Salty’s on the Columbia when dinner calls for a waterfront view.

And really, that’s part of what makes living in Portland, Oregon so good. Some of the best parts of the city aren’t big attractions. They’re the neighborhood patios, local restaurants, and sunny afternoons you start looking forward to every year.
