Are you considering remodeling your home or buying a home that's been remodeled? In addition to your personal preferences, there are a few practical things you need to keep in mind.

US market home sales of renovated homes was valued at $394 Billion in 2018, with a projected increase to $680 Billion by 2025. Renovating a home can be a big project, but along with regular preventive maintenance, the upgrades and repairs can increase the value of a home and help with negotiations during selling. Before starting home renovation, however, here are a few things to note:

1. Talk to family and friends who have renovated their homes. Ask about their experiences and any unexpected challenges.
2. Ask for quotes from several different contractors, and make sure to gather references from family and friends and check online reviews.
3. Review your financial resources and create a budget. Don’t forget to factor in a cushion in case of project scope creep.
4. If you are buying new furniture or appliances for renovated rooms, double check the size before purchase. You don’t want to design a beautiful new kitchen only to find out at the end that the space for the oven is too small.
5. Consider having a home inspection before staring the renovation process to help determine a need for additional repairs or upgrades.

there are an estimated 31,000 home fires each year related to electrical systems, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Some of these fires originate from failure or malfunction within electric components of home appliances, such as coffeemakers and microwaves. These devices help make daily life more convenient, but it’s important to make sure they are used safely as there are inherent risks with any electrical equipment. Follow these easy steps to help reduce risk of fire, and continue to enjoy your morning coffee with peace of mind:

1. Check electrical cords and stop using any appliance with frayed or damages cords.
2. Keep electrical appliances away from water sources such as bathtubs and pools.
3. Make sure electrical plugs fit snuggly into outlets. If the cords seems to be loose and can be pulled out easily, use a different outlet.
4. Never use extension cords to power high-wattage appliances, such as air conditioners or portable electronic heaters.
5. Keep heat-producing appliances unplugged when not in use.

Follow our home appliance series for additional safety and maintenance tips to help keep you and your home safe.

As the temperature drops, it's time to make changes around the house to get everything in order for the cold season ahead. Christmas trees are fun and festive, but they are also the starting point for an average of 160 home fires each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Electrical and lighting equipment contribute to 44% of these fires, while another 25% are related to proximity to a heat source. Even if your Christmas tree is already set up and decorated, it’s never too late to do an extra safety check. Following a few simple best practices can help reduce risk of fire to your home and keep you and your family safe.

1. Check lights for any frayed or damaged wires and plugs, and immediately remove and replace any strands that are not in good condition.
2. Only use lights that are labeled “UL” (Underwriters Laboratory) or “FM” (Factory Mutual). These lights have been tested for safety.
3. Keep tree hydrated and dispose of it as soon as it begins to dry out.
4. Reduce use of extension cords by positioning your tree close to an electrical outlet.
5. Never burn candles near the tree and avoid placing the tree next to fireplaces or other sources of heat.

Energy consumption in the U.S. increases during the Winter months as people crank up the heat, turn lights on earlier in the day, and decorate for the holidays. This makes it a great time to think about ways to cut back on energy usage and bring that electrical bill down. Making a few small changes, such as unplugging electrical appliances when not in use and switching to energy efficient lightbulbs can save several hundred dollars a year. With that amount increasing the more steps you take, the savings begin to add up.
