⚠️ Before You Submit Your Maine License Renewal…
Continuing education is not something to finish after renewing your license.

In a recent public disciplinary matter, a Maine real estate licensee renewed without first completing the required 21 hours of continuing education, including the applicable core course. The licensee also attested on the renewal application that the requirements had been completed when they had not.

The Maine Real Estate Commission imposed:
💵 A $3,000 civil penalty, payable within 30 days
⛔ A 90-day license suspension
📚 The 21 hours completed after the renewal could be used only for that overdue renewal—not toward the next renewal period

The outcome could have been even more severe. Maine law permits a civil penalty of up to $1,500 for each violation. Because three violations were found, the potential fine exposure was up to $4,500.

A motion to require 200 additional hours of continuing education was also considered, although it did not pass.

The lesson is simple: Do not click “submit” until you know your education is complete.

Before renewing:
✅ Confirm that you have all 21 approved hours
✅ Make sure you completed the correct core course
✅ Check the completion dates on every certificate
✅ Keep copies of your certificates
✅ Never attest to something that is not yet true

A missed class can usually be corrected. An inaccurate statement on a license application can become a separate disciplinary violation.

🔥🏡 Ever notice an iron arm swinging out from the side of an old fireplace?

That is a fireplace cooking crane—a practical feature from the days when the hearth was also the kitchen.

The hinged iron arm allowed cooks to hang heavy pots and kettles over the fire, then swing them closer to or farther from the heat. It also made it easier to move a hot pot away from the flames without lifting it directly from the hearth.

Cooking cranes were especially common in homes of the 1700s and early 1800s, before cast-iron cookstoves became widespread.

Today, finding an original crane inside an old fireplace is a wonderful clue that the hearth may once have been used for much more than keeping the house warm.

Old homes have a way of preserving everyday history right in the walls. 🔥🏡
