John Thurston - Real Estate

John Thurston - Real Estate I am a Realtor with eXp Realty in northern Idaho and California. Home ownership starts with a dream. It is these dreams that lead us to northern Idaho. You!

Forty-one years ago, my wife and I bought our “dream home” in Sacramento, California. As we matured and the size of our family grew our dreams changed. Living in Coeur d’Alene with my wife and our two youngest children since 2004, I know what a special place this region is. Before moving to Idaho, I was a Police Detective with the Sacramento Police Department and after that a Private Investigator.

Working a variety of assignments, including the Homicide Unit, drove me to seek a better place, for my family, after I retired. We found such a place in Idaho. Two of our children now live in California. In 2021, my wife and I purchased a condo in the Palm Springs area to be closer to our children and grandchildren throughout the year. After so doing, I was licensed in California. Personally I have been involved in the purchase and sale of several properties, including my own residences, investment properties, and land. I know the excitement of closing on the perfect property, and I also understand and have experienced many of the pitfalls in buying or selling real estate. I have only one concern . . . I am committed to attain the best price for your home, to find the right home for you to buy, to help you achieve your goals for personal and investment properties, to take care of all the details to insure your real estate transaction seems effortless and enjoyable, and to go the extra mile to insure a win-win situation for all parties. I am committed to exceptional service. I will do my utmost to provide you with the best representation I can.

🏡 JUST LISTED $865,000 | NEAR SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN

Priced below appraisal and offering 1.3± acres at the base of Schweitzer Mountain, this property brings together space, flexibility, and plenty of possibilities.

The two-story home features a main-floor primary bedroom, while an unfinished ADU—with most materials already onsite—offers an opportunity to create additional guest space or explore future income potential.

You’ll also find a large shop with room for up to four vehicles, a carport with space for up to four more, MUR zoning, an above-ground pool, a swing set, and room to enjoy the North Idaho outdoors.

There’s a lot here to work with, and the motivated seller is ready to make a move.

In a small North Idaho town like Mullan, a football field is more than a place to play a game. It’s where generations of memories are made.

Today, John Drager Field carries a lot of history. For decades, Mullan Tigers have taken the field while families, students, neighbors, and friends filled the sidelines. During John Drager’s long coaching tenure, Mullan football won 14 league titles and back-to-back state championships in 1983 and 1984. In 1996, the field was officially renamed in his honor.

But what I appreciate most about places like this is that their story is bigger than any one coach, player, or season.

It’s about generations of local kids wearing the same school colors. It’s about families showing up on Friday nights. And it’s about a small community coming together to support its own.

The scoreboard resets after every game. The memories stick around a whole lot longer.

That’s one of the things I enjoy about North Idaho. Our small towns have stories everywhere you look.

House hunting has changed dramatically over the years.
Not that long ago, buyers would circle newspaper ads, spend Saturdays driving neighborhoods, and hope the home they wanted was still available. There was a lot of guesswork and a lot of windshield time.
Today, technology gives buyers access to listings almost as soon as they hit the market. Virtual tours, aerial photography, interactive maps, and instant alerts make it easier to narrow your search before you ever step inside a home.
The technology is better, but one thing hasn't changed.
Buying the right home still comes down to understanding the market, asking the right questions, and having someone guide you through each step.
Technology helps you find the house.
Experience helps you choose the right one.

Sometimes timing matters more than dollars. Knowing whether a seller needs a quick closing or extra time can make your offer more attractive without increasing your price.

Curious about negotiation strategies that don't always involve spending more? Let's talk.

JUST SOLD 🏡🌊

Another North Idaho lake property officially has new owners.

This one offered a combination that can be difficult to find—unobstructed views of Kidd Island Bay, private dock and boat slip access directly across the road, more than 2,700 square feet of updated living space, and two parcels with plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors.

Add in the convenience of being about 20 minutes from downtown Coeur d’Alene, and it’s easy to see what made this property stand out.

Congratulations to everyone involved in getting this one across the finish line!

Thinking about buying or selling a lake property in North Idaho? I’m always happy to talk through the market, the details that matter, and what your next move could look like.

There are places that remind you how much a community can change when it's built with purpose.

Riverstone Park is one of those places.

Not too many years ago, this area was an abandoned lumber mill and gravel pit. Today, it's one of Coeur d'Alene's favorite places to spend an afternoon, take a walk, grab a cup of coffee, or simply enjoy the Spokane River.

The 13-acre park is surrounded by trails, restaurants, local shops, waterfront views, and plenty of open green space. Whether you're out for a morning walk, meeting friends for dinner, or watching the sunset with your dog, it just feels easy to be here.

What I appreciate most is how this space wasn't simply preserved—it was thoughtfully transformed into something that serves the community every day.

It's places like Riverstone that give you a real sense of what living in Coeur d'Alene is all about: a little slower pace, beautiful surroundings, and a lifestyle that encourages you to enjoy where you are.

If you've been wondering what makes North Idaho such a special place to call home, this is a pretty good example.

I'll admit it—almost every homeowner reaches that stage eventually. Once you're responsible for the utility bills, you start noticing things that never crossed your mind before. Lights, thermostats, dripping faucets, and doors left open suddenly become part of everyday conversations.
The nice thing is that small habits really do add up over time. Energy-efficient upgrades and simple routines can help keep costs down while making your home more comfortable year-round.
It's one of those lessons nobody really teaches you—you just earn it through experience.
How long did it take before you became the "turn the lights off" person?
