The Oregon Trail: Apparently We Chose the Advanced Level

There was a major traffic problem on I-84 today.

Not your ordinary “Oh darn, we’ll be 20 minutes late” traffic problem.

This was the kind of traffic problem that closes a highway for eight hours.

Now, reasonable people might have said, “Well, I guess we’ll wait.”

We are not those people.

We looked at the map and thought, There has to be another way.

And there was.

The Oregon Trail.

Or at least I’m pretty sure it was the Oregon Trail because what followed was approximately 30 miles of gravel road, enough dust to bury a small settlement, and speeds hovering around 2 miles per hour.

At some point I began to understand why the pioneers simply stopped somewhere and said, “This looks good. Let’s build a town.”

We had no covered wagon.

We had no oxen.

We had air conditioning, bottled water, GPS and snacks and yet morale was beginning to deteriorate.

Eventually, like weary settlers spotting civilization on the horizon, we emerged onto Highway 20 near Brogan.

WE HAD MADE IT.

🎉 Cue the victory music.

And then…

Pssssssssssssssss. 🛞🛞🛞💣

A hole in the tire roughly the size of an oxen’s head.

Because apparently the Oregon Trail requires a sacrifice before allowing you to leave.

Thankfully, I married well. 😂

Praise God, Jim is strong, handy and perfectly capable of changing a tire on the side of an Oregon highway while I contributed the extremely important task of standing nearby offering encouragement.

And civilization, otherwise known as Les Schwab 🙏🏼 was only 13 miles away.

So today’s travel lesson:

Sometimes an eight-hour traffic jam is actually the faster route.

But where’s the story in that?

Oregon Trail: 1
Jim & Ida: 1
Tire: 0

And unlike the original Oregon Trail…

Nobody died of dysentery. 😂

I’m calling it a win. ✅✅✅

A few moments today gave me those little self-check reminders about what’s actually important.

1. Take the road you’ve never traveled.
There’s something about a road trip through a place you’ve never seen that forces you to live in the moment. You look out the window. You notice things. You wonder what’s around the next bend. You’re actually there instead of thinking about where you need to be next.

2. Answer people.
Odd lesson of the day. 😂 Trying to reach someone who hasn’t answered calls or texts reminded me of two things:
A) I may listen to WAY too many true-crime podcasts because my brain immediately starts writing an episode.
And B) don’t be that person.
Common courtesy still matters. Even when you’re busy, a quick “I’m tied up — I’ll call you later” takes about 10 seconds. People matter. Respond.

3. Unplug once in a while.
We spent part of the drive listening to WWII history. It’s hard to listen to those stories without being reminded that evil is real — and heroes are real, too. Ordinary people have faced extraordinary circumstances, made enormous sacrifices and done incredibly courageous things.

It also makes whatever is happening on your phone seem considerably less important.

And finally…

Baker City, Oregon is COOL.

If you’ve never been, put it on the road-trip list. Just maybe don’t arrive on a Sunday or Monday because apparently the entire town collectively decided those are days of rest. 😂

But walk it. Really walk it.

Look up at the architecture. Wander the alleys. Read the plaques. Think about the people who built these enormous stone buildings when this was the “Queen City of the Inland Empire.” Take your time.

✅Eat at Cabyn.
✅Stay at the Geiser Grand.
✅Bring the dog.
✅✅Put the phone away for a while.
And every once in a while, take a road you’ve never traveled before.
Turns out you might find more than a new town. ❤️🇺🇸
