Austin Short knows that the real estate experience can be a daunting and overwhelming experience for individuals and families. Having degrees in Music from both Kansas State University and Northwestern University, Austin was a professional Opera singer based out of Chicago. While in Chicago he transitioned into the hospitality industry and rose to District Manager successfully managing multiple restaurants and overseeing hundreds of employees. It was after 7 successful years in management that Austin made the decision to get into real estate. The success continued and he quickly became recognized as a top agent within Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Earning awards as a Leading Edge Society member 2017, 2018, 2019 and Presidents Circle Gold member in 2020. Austin’s approach to real estate is educational and fun! Austin wants the client to feel at ease during the process but wants them to be equipped with all the knowledge they can to make the best decision possible. This level of care and attention comes from a high working knowledge of homes as Austin is an accomplished home renovator, flipper, designer and even new home builder. He uses all of this depth of knowledge to assist before, during, and after the real estate process because he understands he is not a real estate agent but a trusted advisor for all things home! Austin lives in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife Jancis and their three sons Eli, Giles, and Charlie. They have two dogs who also keep them busy. Austin and his family love the outdoors and are often out hiking and biking the many parks and trails around Kansas City. When big adventures arise they enjoy visiting National Parks. Some of Austin’s favorites are King’s Canyon and Yosemite.

I was scared when the lender called and said

“Austin there is only enough money in this break down to buy the house, there is no money left in this margin for any of the renovation. Your option is to find money elsewhere or we can see if you have any equity in your house and borrow that?”

That conversation was a tough one with Jancis. I had never flipped a house before, we had no money saved, I had done my research and felt ready but now we were staring at the whole thing falling apart.

She said “Well it sounds like we need to take out the Heloc, I believe in you”

What a moment! I felt supported but at the same time even more frightened of what I was getting myself in to. I couldn’t let her down! I couldn’t let myself down! It was time to make it happen!!

I worked 8am-10pm for almost 3 months doing the flip on my own, with no experience and no crew! Maybe it was stubbornness? Maybe it was hustle? Maybe it was God looking out for me? Maybe it was all of those? Yeah, Probably all of them. Whatever it was, I found a way.

As I neared the finish line of that project, and stood back, and look at what had been accomplished. The flip represented a transformation! Not just of the house but more importantly of myself!

You see 6 months prior I was miserable and exiting a career I could no longer continue in. It was killing me! I hard quit! Stupid right?!! Yes! It was pretty stupid. But that’s what happened. I made a promise to Jancis that I would figure it out. And this house represented “figuring it out” It was my proof, OUR proof, that this scary path would work out!

I was only 4 years older, than he is now, when Eli came into this world! That is a wild thought! When God said to me “take care of this one, he’s special!” I was scared, excited, and filled with a kind of love I had never felt or known before. I’ve failed at times but I know in my heart I’ve succeeded 1000+ times more. And the bond that has created can never be broken! I will continue to take care of you Eli. I will never stop.

Eli is the best of us. He’s faced challenges in his young life with the courage I could only hope to cling to, yet he displays his courage with a quiet and steady confidence. It’s not boastful or proud, it’s assured and kind. Eli is smart and he’s talented but above all else Eli is loving. He loves his Mother! He loves his brothers! He loves his friends! Eli it’s that love that will carry you far.
