I had such a great time this weekend volunteering with several of my fellow Waldo-Brookside Rotarians at the Geeks for Kids "Wheels & Wishes" gala & Delivery Day! If you haven't heard of them, Geeks is a project of the LEARN Science and Math Club. Technically-talented volunteers from high-school age on up through retirees create electric-motorized cars for kiddos who have a range of mobility issues, giving them the opportunity to explore, learn, & keep up better with their friends. (I helped of course on the sewing team, making the colorful seats, support pillows, & such!)
The cars are given to the kids on Delivery Day (in the huge service bay of Aristocrat Motors' Porsche dealership), where last fittings are done, driving lessons are given, & families get to practice on the Test Track. It's a real happy-tears time, seeing the kids light up first when they start getting the hang of their new car, & then again when it's loaded into their family vehicle & they realize it's theirs TO KEEP. 🥲🫠
The gala happens at the same time (upstairs in the Porsche dealership), educating donors about Geeks' history & goals, breaking down the many aspects of creating the cars, & of course general good times. This was Geeks' second gala ever, & the funds are badly needed especially as the chassis currently used have been discontinued by Mattel (so more expensive ones must be found/built) & the number of kids in need is skyrocketing. Everyone was very generous, & if you'd like to also help, visit http://geeks.learnscienceandmathclub.org !
