Sure did wonder!
Curious why retaining and buried walls are needed along Glassford Hill Road? As part of the widening project, these walls help support the expanded roadway and manage elevation changes throughout the corridor. In areas where there isn’t enough space to create a gradual slope, they allow the road to be widened safely while reducing impacts on nearby properties and existing infrastructure. These structures also provide long-term stability for the roadway and surrounding areas, making the widening work possible.
So why does this work take time? Although the finished walls may look simple, building them is a detailed, multi-step process. Crews must complete excavation, prepare foundations, install structural components, add drainage systems, and place and compact soil behind the wall—all in carefully sequenced phases. Wet weather can slow progress too, as overly saturated soils aren’t suitable for excavation or construction, requiring time for conditions to dry and stabilize.
Since Glassford Hill Road is a busy corridor, construction also has to be staged thoughtfully to maintain traffic flow and ensure worker safety. Each phase is completed and inspected before moving to the next, helping ensure the final structure is safe, stable, and built to last.
