Unfortunately, rental scams are becoming more common, and scammers are getting better at making fake listings look real. Before you send anyone money, take a few minutes to protect yourself.
🏠 **Here are a few tips to avoid becoming a victim:**
✅ **If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.** Be cautious of homes priced far below market value.
✅ **Never pay an application fee, deposit, or rent before seeing the property in person.** If someone refuses to show the home, that's a major red flag.
✅ **Verify who you're dealing with.** Make sure the property is being advertised by a legitimate property management company or the actual owner. Search for the company online, check reviews, and call the phone number listed on their official website—not just the one in the ad.
✅ **Be cautious of pressure tactics.** Scammers often claim there are "lots of applicants" and demand immediate payment to "hold" the property.
✅ **Don't send money through gift cards, wire transfers, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or cryptocurrency unless you've confirmed the person and company are legitimate.** Once the money is sent, it can be very difficult to recover.
✅ **Watch for copied photos and descriptions.** Reverse image searches can sometimes reveal that pictures were stolen from another listing.
