PCSing to Maryland? Here's where to start. 🎖️
As an Air Force Combat Veteran and a Realtor with Home Sweet Home Real Estate here in Prince Frederick, MD, I get this question a lot — so let's talk about it.
POV: you JUST found out you're PCSing to Maryland… now what?
It's time to get an exit strategy together at your current base and start researching your new duty station (JBA, JBAB, Pentagon, Indian Head, Navy Yard, Pax River Naval Base, Fort Meade, etc.).
While you wait on hard orders, here's what you can do in the meantime:
Figure out HOW you're moving — DITY or TMO?
Join ALL the local Facebook groups. Read through old posts, ask questions, start making connections before you even arrive.
Figure out WHERE you're going to live. Are you moving on base? What does on-base housing actually look like? Off base might be the better fit for you — are you renting or buying? Do you need temporary housing while you search for a rental or a home to purchase? Lean on a trusted source to walk you through all of your options.
Schools. If you have kids, check out the GreatSchools website to compare schools across different areas before you commit to a location.
If you do decide to move off base, LOCATION is everything. Connect with a trusted real estate professional who can guide you — whether you're buying or renting, this is worth researching thoroughly. Looking for recommendations for an agent, lender, etc.? Interview more than one. Do your own research beyond a referral. There are a lot of predatory practices out there — ask questions and take your time.
