I had a chance to stop into Chula's, the brand new Mexican-Latin restaurant in downtown Prior Lake, for lunch last week, and one thing became clear immediately...

Prior Lake was ready for this place.

The restaurant was absolutely packed, especially for lunch, so if you're planning to go, I'd recommend making a reservation.

The space itself was warm, inviting, and full of thoughtful details that make you want to stay awhile. You can tell a lot of vision, hard work, and heart went into creating it.

I had every intention of taking beautiful food photos, but this food didn't stand a chance. 😆 I only managed to snap two photos and capture my excitement for that first bite before we dug in.

Honestly, the empty plate photos are a review all by themselves. Everything we ordered was fantastic, and we're already looking forward to coming back for dinner and trying more of the menu.

What I appreciate most is seeing local entrepreneurs invest in Prior Lake and create places where people can gather, connect, and make memories. It was equally exciting to see the community show up and support this beautiful addition to downtown. Chula's was built around family, community, and bringing people together, and it was fun to see that vision already coming to life with a packed restaurant and so much local support.

As a fellow small business owner, I know the amount of time, risk, and dedication it takes to bring a dream like this to life, and it's exciting to see another family-owned business helping make downtown Prior Lake a destination.

Do you ever think, "that looks easy, I bet I could save a few bucks and do it myself"? Sometimes that strategy works out really well... other times, not so much. Giving yourself a haircut, or letting your daughter do it? If you're doing a simple trim, you could probably pull that off. But if you're changing your hairstyle entirely... that takes guts! (At least, in my opinion)

Now there are some things that are just inherently not worth the risk of trying on your own.

Surgery, replacing your transmission, electrical work... etc. Personally, I'd hire professionals for any of these - and maybe you relate.

Believe me, I'm all for overcoming challenges and taking risks to do what needs to be done. Putting in the work and doing research to solve problems is super admirable.

But when time is limited, and you can't handle everything... it's best to focus on what YOU are great at and let others come in and help you out.
This is also true for handling the sale of your home.

Why did Sears stop selling homes in 1942?

These home kits were wildly popular in the early 1900s. When Sears released its “Sears Modern Homes” catalog line, it was complete with 40 ready-to-build homes. Eventually, it was expanded into over 400 different designs and layouts, with the option to add on plumbing and electrical for an additional cost. (For cities without municipal water systems, you could add on an outhouse for just $23.)

The prices ranged from around $650 to around $6,500 for the complete kit, which included pre-cut lumber. They advertised that you could build your own home in 90 days.

Most of the history of these homes was lost due to the destruction of sales records during the move to Sears Tower in the 1970s. However, it is estimated that they sold between 70,000 and 100,000 homes between 1908 and 1940. It is hard to say how many homes are still standing today. At least 5,000 of them have been identified, but most are still undiscovered. Experts believe around 70% of them are still standing.

The phrase “they sure don’t build them like they used to” is a direct reference to Sears homes. (Okay, that part might not be a fact, but it feels true.)

In 1911, Sears opened their own mortgage company in an effort to make the process streamlined for its customers. But this was likely their downfall.

The company faced a public relations disaster when the Great Depression hit. They ended up having to foreclose on many of their own customers’ homes. The final nail in the coffin was the lumber shortage in the early 1940s, due to the preparations for WW2.

They halted residential construction from fulfillment issues and had to refund deposits on homes that were made. They discontinued the catalog in 1940 and completely closed their sales offices in 1942.

Downtown Prior Lake has the cutest new little hidden pink diamond. 💕✨ During the recent Prior Lake Ladies Night Out event, I stopped into The Cassell Collective the newest boutique located inside Sweet Sparrow Permanent Jewelry , and immediately loved the vibe.

Fun fact: both boutiques are mother/daughter-owned small businesses, which honestly makes me love them even more. It’s one of those cute little boutiques where every corner has something fun, pretty, or unique you suddenly “need” 😂

Needless to say… I already left with a few things.

From adorable clothing, accessories, and gifts to candles, bath products, and all the little feminine details throughout the store, everything feels thoughtfully curated, fun, and impossible not to browse for awhile. 💕

What made it even better was meeting the owners. They were SO friendly and welcoming, and you can tell this boutique was built with heart. I honestly love seeing women-owned small businesses supporting each other and creating such fun spaces in our community.

As someone with an office downtown, I absolutely love seeing more small businesses bringing life, charm, and personality to Main Ave. These are the places that make a community feel special.

Also… bonus points for the adorable window displays Sweet Sparrow has been doing lately. They’re SO cute and make downtown feel extra fun and charming. 💕

Definitely go check them out and welcome them to downtown Prior Lake. 🛍️💕

Someone asked me recently if the Southwest Metro is a “good place to raise a family.” Honestly… everyone’s looking for something a little different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. And for stupid legal reasons, real estate agents technically aren’t supposed to talk about social questions that might be controversial. But, I can tell you that, at least in my personal experience, MY family absolutely LOVES it here.

Here’s 4 reasons why:

1) You have options for every stage of life.

From established areas like Edina and Bloomington to growing communities like Prior Lake, Lakeville, and beyond, you can find what fits your lifestyle, not force your lifestyle to fit the location.

2) It’s easy to be outside without trying.

Lakes, trails, parks, backyards… whether it’s a quick walk or a full lake day, it’s just part of everyday life here.

3) It’s easy to feel connected day-to-day.

Whether it’s school events, local activities, or just running into people you know, it feels connected without feeling overwhelming.

4) Close to everything, without feeling in the middle of everything.

Quick access to the cities when you need it, but your day-to-day can feel a little quieter and more manageable.

A Grande Iced Dubai Chocolate Mocha at Starbucks costs $6.75. Meanwhile, the median price of a home in the United States is around four hundred thousand dollars right now. That means if you skipped one coffee per day, you could save up enough cash to buy your dream house in....just over 162 years.

This is why I think it's pretty dumb advice to tell people to skip out on simple luxuries to save for a house. The math just doesn't add up.

It's better to focus on the BIG things in your budget (car payment, always paying your credit card, student loans) than to worry too much about buying a coffee.

Sometimes the little things in life are what keep us sane, so we can have the discipline to make responsible decisions on the big things!
