***If you’re looking for one of the best views in Connecticut, you’ll find it here, high above the city of Meriden, at Castle Craig.***
*Castle Craig in Meriden, Connecticut, is a 32-foot stone tower that’s been standing since 1900. It was donated by Walter Hubbard, a local businessman, but what really draws people here isn’t the donor—it’s the view.*
*BUT CAN YOU DRIVE UP CASTLE CRAIG? more of that in a min.*
*Castle Craig is built of trap rock, the same volcanic stone that makes up most of the Hanging Hills. Inside, a metal stairway spirals up to the observation deck. It’s a quick climb, but once you step out, the scenery opens wide. You’re standing at about 300 meters above sea level, one of the highest points in southern New England.*
*The tower sits on East Peak inside Hubbard Park, right in the Hanging Hills. From the top, you get one of the best views in the state. On a clear day, you can see the Sleeping Giant Mountain range to the west, Long Island Sound to the south, and even the foothills of the Berkshires to the north. Some say you can make out the profile of Long Island itself.*
***But let’s talk about the fun part: the drive.***
*Yes— you can. From spring through late October, the access road in Hubbard Park is open during the day tucked into the far right side of the park.. Opens daily at 10 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m.*
*The road is paved but narrow, with sharp curves, and the posted speed limit is 15 miles per hour. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to drive up, winding through forest and past water views, until the road opens into a small parking area directly below the tower.*
*Castle Craig isn’t huge. It’s not fancy. But it’s free, easy to reach, and gives you one of the best views in Connecticut.*
*So if you’re wondering, “Can you drive up Castle Craig?”—yes, you can. And you definitely should.*
