Moving forward and adapting to change.
If you’ve ever gone through a major life-change, which I can guess every one of us has experienced, you realize the levels of stress and apprehension this change can cause.
It can cause stress on many levels that affect your family, mental stability, physical state and many other aspects of your life. This added stress only complicates the new beginning and the process of moving forward. Just think about the last time you ended a relationship, lost a loved one, changed careers (voluntarily or involuntarily), made a major move, lost credibility or respect of your peers, etc. It could also be a combination of a few of these events. It can be a range of any major life events. We also all process and react to the events differently.
After a few simultaneous major life changes and attempting to process these events, a colleague, J.D. Esajian, reminded me of a great way to bring things into perspective. He used the analogy of sitting in or more appropriately driving your car, because life is never sitting still.
Have you ever noticed that the front windshield in all cars is huge compared to the very small rearview mirror?
The past is, and will always there, in your line of vision, reminding you of previous experiences. It is behind you now, but it can be a major distraction. If you only pay attention to this reflection, you will most likely have a wreck in your near future.
Rather, you should keep it there, but only in your peripheral vision. Just peek back occasionally as a reminder of what is behind you, what you have passed and what you have experienced. It should be used to learn what you do not want to repeat and the experiences that have also allowed you to keep moving forward.
The future is ahead. Look through the wide open front windshield. Granted you may not know what hills, twists and turns or other obstacles may lie ahead. You are driving forward, not backward and you have more strength and ability than you may know, to steer where you want to go.
Keep that past reflection in view as a learning tool, but move forward toward the future and proceed.
