A little late getting this message out to you, but many people are still not aware of the rental law changes in Rhode Island. Please reach out to me if you have any questions!

Do you own a rental dwelling unit in the state of Rhode Island?

Beginning 10/1/24, all landlords must register their properties @ https://www.rentalregistry.ri.gov/ Failure to register may result in civil penalties and monthly fines.

Most landlords who own rental units that were built before 1978 are also required to follow state Lead Hazard Mitigation Regulations and obtain a Certificate of Lead Conformance. You can find a licensed Lead-safe inspector @ https://health.ri.gov/find/leadinspectors/ Certificates must be renewed every 2 years or with each new tenant.

All landlords are also encouraged to attend a 3-hour Lead Hazard Awareness class which is available online @ https://lhas.leadsafekids.org/login.php

Landlords who fail to register their property and fail to obtain Certificates of Lead Conformance will no longer be able to file for eviction for nonpayment of rent. Civil penalties and fines will also apply.
