Hurricane Lala left a very different story across Hawaiʻi Island.
While many areas, including much of Kona and South Kohala, were largely spared the worst of the storm, communities in Kaʻū were hit hard. Families lost homes, roads were damaged, businesses were affected, and recovery will take time.
What has happened since has been just as powerful.
Local volunteers began collecting food and supplies almost immediately. Relief hubs were set up near Nāʻālehu and Waiʻōhinu, hot meals are being prepared, essential items are being distributed, and volunteers are continuing to bring support directly into affected communities.
Kaʻū still has a long road ahead.
In our latest blog, we share what really happened during Hurricane Lala, which areas were most affected, how Hawaiʻi Island is recovering, where you can donate directly to families and relief organizations, and what visitors should know about traveling to the island now.
If Hawaiʻi has ever given you a special memory, this is a beautiful time to give a little aloha back.

Kona is so different than the Kohala Coast. A lot is going on, and everything is close. That is one of the best things about living here!
In the next blog in my Big Island Areas series, I highlight the Kona neighborhoods near downtown and Aliʻi Drive. If you’re thinking about buying a home here, it helps to get a feel for the area beyond the property photos. Where will you go for groceries? How close is the beach? What does an ordinary day look like?
The Big Island is vast, and knowing your location is crucial. A beautiful house is a wonderful start, but you want to love living in the neighborhood, too.
