Believed to have hatched around 1832, Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living land animal. He has been alive through the reign of kings and queens, world wars, the invention of cars, airplanes, telephones, television, and the internet. While generations of humans have come and gone, Jonathan has kept moving slowly through time. Today, he lives peacefully on the grounds of Plantation House, the official residence of the Governor on the island of Saint Helena — a remote British territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Jonathan was already old when the first photograph was taken of a human (1838). He was old when the telephone was invented (1876) and when the first airplane flew (1903). He has lived through the Victorian era, both World Wars, the moon landing, and the rise of social media. Despite his incredible age, Jonathan remains healthy and active. He spends his days basking in the sun, eating fruits and vegetables, and mating with other tortoises — including a younger male named Frederik, a common pairing for a 200‑year‑old.

Seychelles giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea) are among the longest‑living animals on Earth, with lifespans regularly exceeding 150 years. Jonathan is not the oldest tortoise ever recorded — that honor belongs to Tu'i Malila, a radiated tortoise who lived to 188 years — but he holds the title for the oldest living. A tortoise born in the 1800s is still here today. Still breathing. Still eating. Still reminding the world that nature can be more extraordinary than fiction. Jonathan has seen more history than almost any living creature on Earth — and he is not done yet.

Anchored in the Storm: Back-to-Back Against the World
They stand as monuments to the beautiful, heavy complexity of human connection—carved from the same metal, yet looking toward entirely different horizons.

In this intimate close-up from Oslo’s Vigeland Park, two souls press close, sharing a spine but carrying separate griefs. Her face is tucked gently, longingly, against the broad curve of his shoulder, her brow furrowed with a quiet, unspoken ache. He stands rigid, staring forward into an unforgiving wind, a portrait of silent strength masked by sorrow.
