💰 What Is an Earnest Money Deposit? 💰

An earnest money deposit is a good-faith payment a buyer submits when making an offer on a home. It shows the seller that the buyer is serious about purchasing the property and intends to move forward with the contract.

Think of it as a buyer's commitment to the transaction. The funds are typically held in an escrow account and are applied toward the buyer's closing costs or down payment at closing.

If the contract terms are met, the buyer receives credit for the deposit at closing. If the buyer backs out for a reason not permitted by the contract, they may risk losing the earnest money.
