Define areas with colums and half walls! The goal with this renovation was to open up the space to let in more light, while avoiding the impression of a long narrow room. The wainscot was left in the dinning room, but the wall above it was taken down and columns were inserted. The living room walls were eliminated and replaced with pilasters, beams, and a column. I offer complementary design consultation for buyer clients during their search for a new home.

Minimalism in the Kitchen! Concentrate the storage to create a sense of space. To show off the beauty of this iridescent quartzite stone and to create a feeling of openness, I replaced wall cabinets with an oversized pantry with sliding glass and cherry doors. Go Bold with Blue! With this renovation, the goal was to create a feeling of openness between the dinning room and the kitchen without sacrificing the original 1910 wainscot paneling and maintaining a sense of formality. I took down the walls above the paneling, installed a decorative beam, colum, and pilasters to define the space. The cabinets were chosen to match the house's paneling style and finished with a beautiful milk paint (the tonal aspects are more apparent in person). Bring the Spa home! Design your own santuary right at home with whirlpool baths and marble mosaics. If you don't have room for a large tub you might want to consider a japanese style seated whirlpool tub (shown below). Here are a few of my designs. Tear down the walls! In this renovation, to create a living space with more natural light, I moved the main floor to the 2nd floor and tore down the walls. I added even more light with a sola tube skylight that came down through the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor and and an enlarged opening in the 2nd floor ceiling under a 3rd floor skylight. If you are going to have to carry the groceries up a flight of stairs, best to have a wide enough stair case...I built a 4' wide stair case, but still true to the original staircase fabrication design of the house. Let the sunshine in! In this gut-job renovation I installed glass bridges to let the light shine down through 2 floors from the the 3rd floor skylight. I offer complementary design consulting for buyer clients.
