250 years of the 4th of July
I deeply love this country. I've called it home since I was eight years old, and I grew up learning about the beacon of light and hope America was meant to be: freedom of religion, the promise that if you worked hard, you could build a decent life. There was a sense that our leaders were held to a standard of honor.
I'm not naive. There has always been corruption on both sides of the aisle, always racism, always homophobia. But I believed most leaders acted from some baseline of honor, of care, of trying to do right, and that, even slowly, things kept bending towards a better world for our children. A more inclusive, kinder world.
I've built the most amazing life here with my family, and I'm grateful for it every day. I'm so grateful to my parents who left their whole life in Ecuador to give us better opportunities. I watch my kids thrive because of their own hard work, dedication, and character. And still, I worry about where our democracy is headed; I worry about our future, the future of our natural resources, the future of our education system, the future of our healthcare system.
I celebrate wholeheartedly because of what this country has meant, and still means, to so many people. But I'm also sad, at the hate, at the corruption, at how far we sometimes are from our own ideals. I hope we can come together and do better as Americans who love this country and want to see it thrive.
These words still stand, and they're still worth working toward, not with the limits of who they excluded when they were written, but as a promise meant for everyone: every ethnicity, every religion, no matter who you love or what you do for a living, how much money you have or what you look like.
