North Carolina is taking another step toward expanding housing supply.🏡

The newly signed Regulatory Reform Act streamlines the development of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) - including backyard cottages, garage apartments, and in-law suites - and makes it easier to convert certain commercial properties into residential or mixed-use housing.

These changes could help put existing properties to better use and reduce some of the regulatory barriers that can slow housing development.

We’re excited to see our work at Milner Commons and Executive Director Yolanda Winstead featured in a recent INDY Week article examining affordable housing and property tax exemptions in North Carolina.🌟

The article highlights how property tax exemptions help make projects like Milner Commons financially feasible, supporting deeply affordable homes for low-income seniors. At Milner Commons, rents can be as low as $500 per month.

When families are feeling the pressure of rising food and household costs, access to food is more important than ever.🍏

Thanks to SERP, this is what we were able to do through a new food pantry at Beacon Ridge!

They partnered with the local Food Bank to secure donated food and contributed a personal investment to stock the freezer with food for residents.

This is what strong community partnership in action looks like. 💪

What a night! 🎉🍔💃

We had so much fun celebrating with our residents, neighbors, families, and local law enforcement in Raleigh last month. From crafts for the kids’ to dancing with the family, it was an important reminder of our shared goals as a community.

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this year’s NNO celebration one to remember! 💙

“I wake up with a smile on my face every morning and I go to sleep with a smile on my face. It’s peaceful.” - LaToya, DHIC Property Resident

For us, affordable housing is about more than a home - it’s about creating a sense of belonging.

LaToya’s words are a powerful reminder of why we do this work: because everyone deserves a place where they can feel at peace.🏡
