This needs to be moved!!
Mayor Janet Cowell has responded to Raleigh Mag's March story about the future of the GoRaleigh Moore Square Bus Station—and the growing conversation around relocating it elsewhere Downtown amid rising crime, mounting security costs and transit inefficiencies. In a release sent out this morning, she shared a slate of short-term solves, some already in place, some on deck:
What's Already Happening:
🚍 Uniformed + undercover police riding buses
🚍 Additional on-site private security
🚍 Added supervisors + dispatchers
🚍 Updated rider code of conduct
🚍 Driver training in de-escalation
What's Next:
🚍 Upgraded cameras
🚍 Increased overnight security when station is closed (12:30–4am)
🚍 Design fixes aimed at safety: think better lighting, eliminating dark nooks, directional signage, etc.
The bigger shift? Rethinking how the system works. RM's March reporting also pushed on whether a centralized hub design still makes sense vs. a more distributed grid. Cowell called the grid system "a valid concept," noting early moves already underway: "Less-centralized routes are being added, such as NC State University to Midtown." Additional route changes will be incremental based on rider needs + coordination with Wake County.
Ultimately, this isn't just about one station. It's about how Raleigh moves. Stay tuned for our June issue for more on the future of the station.
