UPP student Kai Luo describes his participation in our premier 'Packpals' Program. Congrats to him and his packpal, Brendan, for setting the bar high! Their experience shows how engaging in the risky endeavor of intercultural friendship-building can transform our self-assessments. While an initial dismissal of language ability stunted Kai's confidence, this connection across boundaries--given time to flourish--later inspired positivity and trust. It's our hope that future UPP students embark on a similar journey, assured by the eventual payoff of investing in domestic student relationship building. Connecting with locals, understanding their humor, and generating lasting relationships with them happens not overnight, but months after the first step is taken in the right direction.

"For the first time I meet my pack pal, I was really not confident. I am a person who is not good at communicating, especially if it's not my mother language. I was afraid I cannot get a good conversation, or maybe even cannot understand his ideas . I was worried a lot about an embarrassing meeting. But on the other side, I was excited about this meeting. I know it should be a valuable opportunity for me to make an American friend and we can share our ideas from different perspectives and culture backgrounds. Actually that was also something I am literally looking for. The first meeting between us was a good beginning of our friendship. I found that he was outgoing, friendly, and the most important point is he is really a good listener. He can always get my idea from my undeveloped sentence and help me correct my language errors. And he can always share special ideas about our topics or give some significant comments to my point. I enjoy the communication between us. I know I can learn a lot from him. On the next meeting, he took me to his hometown. And we went a restaurant that he always went in his childhood. That really surprised me. In this way, He was trying to share his life, experience and feeling with me. And I opened my mind to share my ideas and experiences. The most unforgettable experience is that he took me to visit his high school. He talked about the his high school life and the feeling of “nostalgia” at the moment.
For the next few times, we went to the some Chinese restaurants, tried some traditional American flavor, we went bowling, pooling and even made a documentary project together. I really learned so much from him and will be excited to continue building our friendship."

Our annual Fall Break trip to Asheville was spectacular! The students enjoyed many different activities throughout the weekend. One student, Joey, wrote:

"Traveling to Asheville was an amazing experience. On Oct. 10th, we departed from our campus. Mountains, sunshine, came as promised; The titmouse, the cloud, comes with it.From the visitor center,we head to the artistic Downtown Asheville. Sculptures, antiques, fulfilled our view; Snack,Delicacy, satisfied our appetite. In the evening, we came to Zanski's drum forum, felt the rhythm pulse in the drums, felt the wind, forest, volcano and the tranquility of life in various ancient Musical Instruments, and thoroughly washed the fatigue of a day's ride. The next day, after tempting apples in our bag, we set out from The fragrant orchids to The Gorge Zipline in The hills. The ropeway is crisscrossing but cannot lock up our eager excitement; The woods overcast, but was unable to stop our gushing courage. It is a unique experience to jump down from the sky and enjoy the most primitive beauty of nature. At night, we drove to the top of the mountains, bathed in the bright moonlight and shining stars. Listened to the birds and insects in the mountains. However, the wonderful journey is like a meteor in the night sky. In the blink of an eye, we came to the last day of our journey. After breakfast at the ornate Omni Grove Park Inn, we stopped at a waterfall at Cedar Mountain to watch the spring tilt down from above, listen to the roar of the water, and feel the chilly water temperature. I will never forget this wonderful trip. "

A few weeks ago, our students partnered with NC State's Sailing Club to venture out onto the water and learn the tactics of sailing from them!

One student wrote,

"Warm sunshine
Soft breeze
First sailing of Lake Crabtree
I found the importance of the power of nature, holding onto a direction
To catch up with the captain, tacking, jibing, tightening and loosening
Should have enjoyed the moist breeze early on
Should have watched the clouds at dawn early on
Now I have realized the end of the shore has the first light of morning

North Carolina and me,
And now I know, so many much is to come" - Alysia

Lake Crabtree

- Alysia

On September 14th, 15 UPP students helped volunteer at Raleigh's SparkCon Festival. Here is what one student had to say about his experience:

"Sparkcon is an event where me and other students helped Americans get Chinese tattoos and decorate lanterns. This is a kind of volunteer during an art festival that lets people to learn about Chinese culture, and gives a chance for us to be teachers to the people of Raleigh. It’s very hard to explain to Americans my culture, sometimes they cannot understand us. Because the way we think about culture and language is different. But the interesting thing is the humor can be similar, and the similar things can give a connection. I had to try many different techniques of explanation and connection when I asked people what kind of Chinese tattoo they wanted. For example, some people would ask why does the character look like that, but it was difficult to answer some questions because we never thought of things like that, those are the Chinese truths I never think about but are a part of who I am." - Zach Ma

The UPP team from NCSU and UNCG met recently to review the 2018-2019 school year, report key learnings from our annual Curriculum Review, and reconnected before we dive into preparations for Fall 19!

As per tradition, the team hiked together to recharge and appreciate nature after finishing a series of fruitful, but long meetings! This year was the picturesque Pilot Mountain!

Looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year!
