The moving to Wyoming dream usually starts with a picture of living on acreage.

A few acres. Mountain views. Room for a horse. Or goats. Maybe a shop, a barn and enough distance from the neighbors to finally breathe.

And honestly? It can be every bit as good as it sounds.

But the listing photos rarely show you the morning when a water hydrant breaks, irrigation needs attention, the fence won’t hold, the driveway needs plowed … or you discover that five acres can grow an impressive amount of weeds.

Acreage isn’t simply a bigger yard.

It may come with a well, septic system, irrigation rights, fencing, pasture management, snow removal, equipment, livestock considerations and repairs you may be learning to handle for the first time.

None of that means you shouldn’t do it.

It means the right acreage buyer needs to understand what they’re buying. Not just how beautiful it looks at sunset.

I’ve lived on acreage for more than 20 years, and I absolutely love it. But I’d rather help someone choose land that fits the life they actually want than sell them a version of the dream they weren’t prepared to maintain.

Because acreage can give you freedom, privacy and an extraordinary way of life 💕

Every year, moving trucks cross the Wyoming state line … in both directions.

Some are carrying people who’ve spent years dreaming about more space, less traffic and a different pace of life.

Others are carrying people who already lived here… and decided somewhere else fit them better.

In 2024, about 25,500 people moved into Wyoming from another state.

But roughly 20,200 moved out.

Wyoming still came out ahead by about 5,300 residents.

Here’s the part I find more interesting.

The biggest sources of newcomers were Colorado, Texas and California.

But some of the leading destinations for people leaving Wyoming were Florida, North Carolina and Colorado.

Same state.

Two completely different decisions.

And that’s why I don’t think the most useful question is:

“Is Wyoming a great place to live?”

Plenty of people are choosing it.

Plenty of people are choosing something else.

The better question is whether the tradeoffs that come with living here fit the life YOU actually want.

That’s a much harder question to answer from pretty homes and mountain pictures.

If you’re considering moving to Sheridan, you likely have a few assumptions about a town this size:

Fewer services.
Fewer resources.
And often, less access to healthcare.

So this comes up in buyer conversations more than you might expect.

Sheridan doesn’t just have a VA clinic.

It has a regional VA Medical Center.

And the scale surprises people.

The Sheridan VA system serves more than 12,500 veterans every year, with the Sheridan campus plus eight outpatient, telehealth and outreach locations across Wyoming.

The Sheridan facility has 185 beds and has been serving veterans from the historic Fort MacKenzie grounds since 1922.

Its roots are particularly interesting: it originally opened to care for veterans experiencing what was then called “battle fatigue,” and mental health remains an important part of its mission today.

For eligible veterans relocating here, that can be a pretty significant piece of the Sheridan equation.

And it’s exactly the kind of thing you probably wouldn’t know from looking at population numbers and pretty houses online.

And the VA isn’t Sheridan’s only healthcare anchor.

We also have Sheridan Memorial Hospital, a regional hospital serving Sheridan and the surrounding area.

So while moving to a smaller Wyoming community can mean tradeoffs, Sheridan’s healthcare footprint is bigger than many relocation buyers expect.
