Recession or not, here’s the truth.
Recessions are a part of our history, and while they can feel overwhelming in the moment, they’ve always come and gone. The economy moves in cycles. What matters is knowing that each time, we’ve made it through and grown stronger on the other side.
Here’s a super simple look back at every U.S. recession since the 1970s, just to give you some perspective.
1973–1975
Kicked off by an oil crisis and rising inflation. This one hit hard according to my parents and lasted 16 months.
1980
Caused by efforts to cool down inflation. It was short, only 6 months, but tough on businesses and buyers alike.
1981–1982
This one came fast after the 1980 recession. High interest rates made borrowing nearly impossible. It lasted 16 months.
1990–1991
A milder dip, triggered by tight monetary policy and uncertainty around the Gulf War. Lasted 8 months.
2001
The dot-com bubble burst, and then 9/11 hit. The economy slowed quickly. Lasted 8 months.
2007–2009
The Great Recession. I clearly remember this one. Fueled by the housing crash and financial crisis. It was deep and long, 18 months.
2020
The pandemic shutdowns brought everything to a halt. It was sharp but short.
202? - 204?
When will it happen?
We’ve been through all of these, and we’re still here, still moving forward. Beware of the clickbait we have in this day in age and remember whatever the market is doing right now, don’t forget how much we’ve already made it through. 💙
