Juneteenth is a time to honor freedom and community.

San Diego Foundation is supporting Paddle for Peace’s 6th Annual Juneteenth at the Beach, a community celebration with BBQ, beach games, music and connection by the coast.

The event takes place June 20, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at La Jolla Shores Beach.

Check in before you get in!

Heads up, Carlsbad. Your Carlsbad Lifeguards are seeing an extended stretch of above-average surf, large swells and stronger currents along our coastline. Add in warmer-than-normal water temperatures, and we’re seeing more people heading into the ocean while conditions remain more challenging than usual.

Ocean conditions can change quickly, even within the same day. Before entering the water:

- Swim near an open lifeguard tower
- Expect stronger surf and currents
- Stay within your swimming abilities
- Check in with your nearest lifeguard about current ocean conditions and hazards

The daily condition signs posted at lifeguard towers are there for a reason. Take a moment to review them and talk with a lifeguard before heading into the water. A quick check-in can make all the difference.
