Oceanside's Public Works Crews start mowing and chipping tall vegetation in the San Luis Rey River channel today, the start of Oceanside's annual flood control work across roughly 171 acres between College Boulevard and Benet Road.

In the coming weeks, a second crew will start removing invasive species in the riverbed between I-5 and College Boulevard, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will handle additional brush clearance elsewhere in the channel, all part of getting the flood control system ready before winter rains arrive.

Funding from the Southern California Library Cooperative and a $1,000 community donation helped bring sewing machines and supplies to the Public Library, allowing residents to participate in its first sewing class.

During the class, participants learned about the key parts of a sewing machine, practiced basic sewing techniques and created their own pincushions. The sewing machines were funded by the Southern California Library Cooperative through EmPOWERing Access, which helps California libraries offer practical tools and hands-on learning opportunities to their communities.

Additional support came from Baltazar Murillo III, who donated $1,000. The entire donation was used to purchase sewing supplies needed for the class. Following the success of the first class, the library says it plans to offer additional sewing classes and is encouraging community members to share ideas for future projects.
