We are reaching out to address a concerning trend affecting our community in South Texas. A significant increase in the theft of Chevrolet and GMC trucks has been observed, originating in Houston and now impacting the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) area. The perpetrators, equipped with advanced OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) readers, have been targeting these vehicles, easily bypassing the GM factory installed anti-theft systems.
The technology these theft crews use is sophisticated and allows them to override security measures quickly.
Our local Auto Theft Task Force has diligently worked to combat this issue, resulting in numerous arrests.
However, the problem persists. The appeal of quick profits, combined with the demand for these trucks from transnational organized crime groups, continues to attract new criminals into this illicit activity.
Most of these thefts occur at night, taking advantage of the owners' sleep time. This timing gives the thieves ample opportunity to transport the stolen trucks across the border into Mexico before the owners can report them missing
In response to this escalating problem, the RANCHO VIEJO Department (RVPD) recommends several proactive measures to protect your vehicles:
1. Use of Steering Column Anti-Theft Clubs: These devices provide additional protection, making it more difficult for thieves to steer the vehicle even if they manage to start it.
2. Installation of Fuel Cutoff Switches: This hidden switch can interrupt the fuel supply, preventing the engine from starting, thus acting as an effective deterrent.
3. Storing Vehicles in Garages: If possible, keep your vehicles in a locked garage, making them less accessible and less visible to potential thieves.
4. Blocking Exposed Trucks: For those without access to a garage, consider parking your truck in a way that makes it difficult for thieves to drive away quickly. This could involve parking other vehicles or obstacles around the truck.
We urge all community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities. Together, through these preventive measures and increased awareness, we can work towards safeguarding our neighborhood and curbing this troubling trend of vehicle thefts.
