Why do people buy houses?

It’s not really about square footage or a good interest rate. It’s the feeling of turning your own key in your own door. Painting a wall whatever color you want. Planting something in the yard and knowing you’ll be there to see it grow.

A house becomes a home when you stop asking “what if we move” and start asking “what should we do next.”

If you’re thinking about what buying could mean for you, I’m happy to talk it through. No pressure, just a conversation.

When Shana and I decided to pick up our lives last year and move our family back to South Dakota, it wasn't an easy decision. We had established a life and a home away from the Black Hills. We had done it our way and with the advice of close friends and family, we were able to thrive. It wasn't always an easy journey, and it was sometimes a lonely one, as all of our family was back here in South Dakota and surrounding areas. However, we did it. Shana became a successful medical assistant and worked for great organizations along the way. I was able to complete 25 years of military service, with 14 being on active duty.

We both grew, we experienced personal growth and familial growth with our amazing three kids, Lily, Natalie, and Luca. We had established as near a perfect life as you can imagine. Then one day a decision was made that enough was enough for me in the military. Our lives were about to change forever and decisions had to be made. It wasn't easy. We prayed a lot and sought out guidance from those we trusted most. In the end we knew what was going to be best for our family. A move back to the place that we started our journey so many years before.

This last year hasn't been easy for our girls or our family. However, it too has come with growth. We have learned to deal with the trials and tribulation of picking up our lives and moving them 10 hours away from everything we had known for 17 years. Don't get me wrong, we love being back, but it has come with it's own struggles. We all had to see the move for what it is, an opportunity. An opportunity to experience new things, old friends, and a better life.

As I type this extremely long post, I realize that it's not about where you end up, it's about the growth and maturity that happens along the way. So enjoy your journey but be cognizant of the growth that comes with it. Don't take for granted where you were, but also, celebrate where you are going. Don't be afraid to rock the boat and do things that make you uncomfortable. Chase your dreams and live life to the fullest! If you made it to the end, thank you for reading.

🏡 Thinking about buying your first home in 2026?
Let’s break it down step-by-step so you feel confident every step of the way!

1. Get pre-approved for a mortgage, this shows sellers you’re serious and helps you know your budget.
2. Make a wish list of must-haves and nice-to-haves for your dream home.
3. Tour homes with your agent and ask ALL the questions!
4. Found “the one?” Make an offer and negotiate with confidence.

This one will stop you in your tracks.

Picture this: pulling up to that paver walkway at golden hour, porch lights glowing, that crisp green roof against a Black Hills sunset. Then you walk inside and it’s even better than the photos.

Beautiful exterior and a front porch made for slow mornings with coffee, and room to breathe both inside and out.

But….. That covered back porch though. 🙌

Shade in the summer, cover when it rains, and a front row seat to all that wide open South Dakota sky. Add the detached shop out back and you’ve got room for the toys, the projects, and the gatherings.

This is the kind of backyard you actually live in and it’s fenced!

Homes with this much character and appeal make for a wonderful life of country living!

I’ve got showings opening up this week in the evenings.

Call or text me and let’s get you through the door.
