Having been a spec builder for many years in Redding, I understand our local market,, and the business of real estate and home construction very well. One of the things that frustrates me in this current market is hearing all the talk about affordability, but nothing about achieving that in homes, aside from the talk about mortgage interest rates.
THE most important thing builders need in order to bring more affordable homes on the market is lower costs of materials. Without lowering the costs to build, no matter what else happens, it's impossible to produce more affordable homes.
When the Fed cuts rates, it does little for mortgage rates. However; it does help businesses that have to borrow money to expand, consumers that have debt, etc. (which helps them in qualifying for mortgages), and builders buying materials. But if those materials are still priced too high, they can't lower housing prices. It would be great if both parties would work together to find incentives for builders,, tax breaks, lower tariffs on manufacturers involved in the building trades, big box retail, etc.
I've called and emailed our Congressman, Doug LaMalfa, and hoping he sees the oppotunity to address something that would impact ALL of the working class in our country.
