My brain loves a 2 AM reminder. Ask me how I know. 🙃

Your brain nags you at 2 AM. Give it a plan.

Here's the wow. For years, the big idea was that an unfinished task bugs you until it's done. Researchers tested it. College students with two unfinished tasks read a mystery story. For students with no plan, stray thoughts crept in. Students who wrote how, when, and where they'd do each task? They scored on the story quiz like their tasks were already done.

They hadn't done a thing yet. The plan alone quieted the nag.

Then a sleep lab tried it at bedtime. Young adults wrote for 5 minutes before lights out. One group wrote tomorrow's to-do list. The other wrote what they'd already finished. The to-do list group fell asleep faster.

Closing on a house takes a long checklist. You'd think I'd have figured out a checklist for my own brain. I'm still practicing.

Tonight's play, five minutes before bed (learned the hard way):
🟢 Dump every loose task on paper
🟡 Give each one a when and a where
💙 Close the notebook and clock out

Try it with your spouse and split the list. Worst case, you have a list. Best case, you both get some sleep. That's how a house turns into a home. 🏡

I replay small talk like game film. Every awkward pause, in slow motion. Ask me how I know. 🙃

That small talk went better than you think.

Here's the wow. Researchers paired up strangers for a short chat. Afterward, each person guessed how much the other one liked them. On average, they guessed too low. The researchers call it the liking gap.

It kept showing up. In a lab. With college dorm mates, for most of the school year. With grown adults at workshops on how to talk to strangers.

Here's the plot twist. People watching videos of the chats could see how much the partners liked each other. The people doing the talking missed it. The researchers think their own harsh replay got in the way.

I meet new people for a living. You'd think I'd have quit grading my own small talk by now. I'm still practicing.

This week's play with one neighbor (learned the hard way):
🟢 Wave, say hi, and learn their name
🟡 Ask one easy question: How long have you lived here?
💙 Assume it went better than you think, and go back for round two

Trick or treat night is a free icebreaker. Worst case, you learn a name. Best case, you make a friend on your street. That's how a house turns into a home. 🏡
