Redondo Beach has a newly state-approved revised Housing Element after a court challenge questioned its original 2022 plan.

The updated plan, approved by the City Council and deemed compliant on May 20, removes prior “overlay” zones, increases density on most designated housing sites, and requires 50% residential use in new developments.

The revision helps protect the city from California’s “Builder’s Remedy,” which can bypass local zoning if a city lacks an approved housing plan.

The case over the original plan is still ongoing in trial court, while the next housing planning cycle begins in 2029.

Following the closure of Kinkan’s Virgil Village location in March 2026, Yimcharoen is shifting focus to a market concept centered on bento boxes, chirashi, prepared foods, and specialty Japanese and Thai ingredients.

The market will also offer sake, beer, tea, pottery, and home goods. Meanwhile, Yimcharoen is hosting Kinkan pop-ups in Kyoto and preparing for Kinkan’s future West Edge location in West Los Angeles, which is expected to open in 2027 with a 15-seat kaiseki-style dining experience.
