What was it like to go to school in Belmont more than 160 years ago?

In 1860, just 17 children were attending school in a Belmont resident’s home. Before long, the growing community had its own schoolhouse—complete with backless wooden benches, a black iron stove, a $50-a-month teacher, and an early version of “air conditioning” that involved a student and a bucket of water.

And yes, there were even dead frogs in the drinking well.

As part of the historical series I’m putting together in recognition of Belmont’s 100th anniversary this October, I’ve written a new post about the history of the Hallmark Drive barrier—and how close this quiet residential street once came to becoming a major thoroughfare connecting San Carlos with Ralston Avenue, Highway 92, and I-280.
The story goes back to the 1970s and involves neighborhood residents, the Belmont Heights Civic Improvement Association, developers, traffic studies, and years of effort to protect the character of the neighborhood.
Much of this history comes from Dick Green’s 2008 account, History of the Belmont Heights Civic Improvement Association — The First Twenty-Five Years, which provides a fascinating record of how the neighborhood we know today came to be.

What's the deal with penthouses?

At some point, a home stops being a home and becomes airspace.

Take the Grand Penthouse at Fremont Street. It's 800 feet above San Francisco. Eight hundred feet! That's not a residence—that's a weather pattern.

Most of us check the forecast before leaving the house. Here, you are the forecast.

The building is said to be anchored to bedrock, engineered to survive just about anything California can throw at it, and connected by skybridge to Salesforce Park. Think about that. You can leave your home, walk across a bridge in the sky, and never have to mingle with something as common as a stoplight.

Apparently, the advertisement states that there's a concierge, valet parking, fitness center, piano bar, private dining room, lounges, media room, conference rooms... honestly, at some point you have to ask: Do I still live in a building, or have I accidentally purchased a small nation?

And then there's the view. From up here, traffic becomes abstract art.

If San Francisco is where the future of artificial intelligence is being built, this may be the closest thing to an executive suite for the future itself.
