File this under “Am I surprised?” $320 million pier built by the US has delivered exactly zero supplies to Gaza as every truck that has left the pier has been looted. Very little planning for distributing aid as either Hamas diverts supplies for their own purposes or there is no security provided to protect them from surging crowds. As Ronald Reagan would say: “There a fewer words more scary that “I’m from the government and I am here to help”.

NOAA predicting 8-13 “sunny day” tidal flooding events in Delaware in the 12 months May-April (about the same as the previous 12 months);
a combination of the land sinking and higher sea levels. This is a mid-Atlantic phenomenon, not unique to our area.

I have become an Uber and Lyft driver. Can’t watch any more news or old movies, and I get to meet new people and help them get where they need to go. I work a few hours a day and have become intimately acquainted with traffic at different times of the day and days of the week.

I walked the community and noted a few thibgs homeowners should be aware of:
1. Your driveway is your responsiblity. Proper maintenance calls for sealing every 2-3 years. It looks like some driveways have never been sealed.
2. Exterior painting is the homeowners' responsibility. There is not a lot to paint but I especially noted second floor pergolas badly in need of pain.
3. Dryer vents are the homeowners' responsibility. They exterior vents at many homes were nearly clogged. That wastes energy and could become a fire hazard.
4. Splash blocks under downspoute should be pitched away from the foundation. Sump pump drain pipes should be kept open. I found a few buried. You can burn out the pump.

Our home, built in 2007 recently needed to have the furnace burners replaced. They were in bad shape and we worked with McGee Heating and Plumbing to have stainless steel burners installed. Cost: $300. We have 2 annual inspections; one on the furnace (November-December) and one on the AC system (April-May). Total annual cost: $350.

Last summer we needed a new fan motor and blade on the AC compressor. These things usually fail at the worst possible moment so preventive maintenance is a must.

Per Beebe hospital 50% of. Delaware’s Covid-19 cases are from out of state. Per our Governor’s directive of yesterday please stay in your primary homes and don’t overwhelm our barely adequate medical infrastructure here. We full-timers will see you all in May when the crisis has passed.

A solution to. Improving access during the current flooding would be to raise the dip in the driveway and install a culvert (raising the road) at the entrance. Estimated cost $15-20,000. The water at its highest depth is approximately 14-16”. The danger is the water blocking the exhaust pipe, killing the engine ”mid-stream”, hence the warning to not drive through deep water. Also, the water is from the bay, hence it is salty and corrosive; bad for your car. Wait it out if you can or find a friend with a Jeep or other high-water tolerant vehicle.
