Today we’re celebrating the generations who built the lives and families we cherish.

National 401(k) Day is a perfect reminder of something most people don’t realize: your 401(k) doesn’t follow your will.

Retirement accounts, 401(k)s, IRAs, and similar plans, pass directly to whoever you’ve named as beneficiary, regardless of what your will says. That’s why an outdated beneficiary form is one of the most common (and costly) estate planning mistakes we see.

An ex-spouse still listed. A beneficiary who has passed away. A form never updated after a child was born. These small oversights can undo an otherwise solid plan.

Our advice: review your beneficiary designations after every major life event, marriage, divorce, birth, death, and make sure your retirement accounts and your estate plan are working together, not against each other.
