Children’s safety is not negotiable, and it’s time we took proper measures to safeguard their well-being. In front of Katherine Dunn Elementary School, a place of learning and joy for our youngest generation, an alarming issue endangers children each day. Katherine Dunn Elementary is located on a bustling street where vehicles hurtle past the school and its cross walks, ignorant of the speed limit and stop signs, all in the pursuit of reaching their next destination with complete disregard of the school zone and child safety. Tragically, these incidents have led to accidents involving children every year; the most recent being this November, 2024. In fact, every day in the U.S. more than 40 kids are hit by a vehicle while walking. That’s more than 15,000 children injured each year. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 19.
Aside from normal school hours, Katherine Dunn Elementary also offers a convenient Pre-K program for children aged 3-5 years. Unfortunately, everyday during pickup, a variety of high school students speed through the school zone during their lunch break in order to get home in time to eat lunch and return to school. What is a cheap solution to this very real problem of child safety being ignored? Implementing speed bumps.
Implementing speed bumps outside Katherine Dunn Elementary could be a cheap, simple, yet impactful measure to mitigate the danger of speeding. Speed bumps would not only slow the flow of traffic, but serve as a much-needed reminder for drivers to prioritize safety over speed. It’s our duty, as a community, to ensure that our youngest, most vulnerable citizens are safe. If the newer elementary schools can have them, why not our beloved Katherine Dunn Elementary?
The primary concern is speed and the precious lives at stake. Let’s convince the relevant authorities to install speed bumps outside Katherine Dunn Elementary School. Please, sign this petition and help make our children’s path to education safer.
