Pictured in the center, the smaller Crozier - probably the original - was found inside the one on the left. Each of the 5 ancient Dewar families were provided with a deed by King James III in which they were charged with the responsibility of protecting one of St. Fillan's relics. Every Dewar family was known and named for the relic it guarded. The "Dewars Coigerach" protected the Crozier or cane. The "Dewars Beltrane" guarded St. Fillan's Bell...and so on. Only the bell and crozier remain today. Their supposed healing powers are locked behind glass as they stand on display at Edinburgh's Royal Scottish Museum in its Antiquities Department.

The cover photo of St. Fillan's Crozier and Bell links me and my family to 9th century Scotland and a long succession of "Keepers," or guardians of the Crozier. As a child, I took my black-and-white photo of the Crozier, a copy of the deed from King James III and a small gold pin, emblazoned with the head of the cane, to school for "show-and-tell" time.

Little did I know that the Crozier truly existed and the story I'd been told of the ancestral Keepers, who guarded it for centuries, was true...and I was their direct descendant. You can read more online. To date I've found only one other person with a pin like mine. The Crozier and Bell are housed in the Antiquities Department of the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. I'd like to take my mother to visit so that she, also a hereditary Keeper, can hold the Crozier - as is promised in the documents passed to us from my maternal great-grandmother.
