First light comes off the Teton front and hits the water before it hits the field. On a fall morning there are ducks working the slow current and geese dropping in over the cattails in twos and threes. That’s just a regular Tuesday on the Texas Slough.

And it’s in good company. The 961± acre Cartier Slough Wildlife Management Area sits just north on the same river bottom. A few miles downstream, the Henry’s Fork meets the South Fork below the Menan Buttes. Ducks and geese work this corridor October through January, trumpeter swans winter around the buttes, and whitetail move through the brush along the slough at first and last light.
I grew up irrigating ground like this outside Rexburg. Places that work as a farm AND a hunting property don’t come up often, and when they do, they don’t sit long.
