New bins for recycling clothing, sheets, shoes, etc. at Clifton Park Transfer Station in Rexford, N.Y., will soon be joined by a bin for old cans of paint and stains.

CLIFTON PARK – In just the last month, the town has added two more huge categories of items it accepts for free to recycle at its transfer station.

Last month, the town started collecting textiles, including old shoes and clothes too damaged for others to wear. Starting May 5, the town is adding cans of paint and stains to the list.

The goal is to reduce the amount of garbage the town must haul away. The weight of hardened leftover paint, which can be thrown in the trash, adds up, said town Supervisor Phil Barrett.

“We’re paying for that. These are business decisions too,” he said. ‘“A big one is footwear. How many pairs of sneakers in Clifton Park are thrown out every year? Now they can be recycled.”

The town is accepting textiles from anyone. But, anticipating a huge response to the paint recycling program, town officials decided to limit it to town residents only, and only on Thursdays.

“The very simple reason for that right now is I expect we will have a fairly busy time collecting leftover paint that maybe people have had for a long period of time in their homes,” Barrett said. “It’s to give us the ability to manage intake and get some experience running the program as well.”

Later, the town might run a regional event elsewhere, he said.

At the transfer station, people can also recycle items for Habitat for Humanity, electronics and used oil – in addition to the common recyclables, like paper, metal and plastic.

“We’re always researching new opportunities,” Barrett said. “It’s a great way to divert waste from the disposal stream. You’d be amazed the amount of stuff we accept and recycle.”
