📅 This Day in St. Louis History — June 13 & The Dawn of Flight ✈️
• Around this time in 1914, aviation pioneer Tony Jannus was flying over St. Louis landmarks, including the mighty Eads Bridge—creating one of the city's most iconic early aviation images.
• Just two years earlier, Jannus piloted the aircraft used in the world's first successful parachute jump from an airplane near Jefferson Barracks.
• St. Louis was already becoming an aviation hotspot thanks to Benoist Aircraft Company and Kinloch Field, a precursor to today's St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
• Jannus would soon make history as the pilot of the world's first scheduled commercial airline flight—helping launch the age of air travel.
Imagine seeing an airplane over downtown St. Louis in 1914. Most people had never even seen one up close!
