Many know Daniel Boone as a frontiersman, trapper, pioneer, and legislator, but a few know he was an influential surveyor. Daniel Boone earned income as a deputy county surveyor from 1783-1797. He made legal surveys in six Kentucky counties and his first eleven surveys were for William Bush; first made in 1783.

DID YOU KNOW? *Daniel Boone known as a pioneer and explorer from Kentucky, despite the fact he had no formal schooling, Boone went on to become an expert tracker. The years following, he took to surveying. By 1783, when he was nearly 50, he became a commissioned land surveyor in Fayette County. Boone executed 150 surveys for settlers. The surveys that pioneers such as Daniel Boone created can still be found in local archives and remain the basis for determining property boundaries today.

LAND SURVEYING FACT: The first president of United States, George Washington, began his remarkable career as a surveyor, mapmaker and soldier. He began to work as a surveyor’s assistant in 1748 at the age of 16. George Washington wasn’t the only president to become a land survey. Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were also Land Surveyors before taking office as President of the United States.
