Hourigan

Hourigan Every building has a story. Stories of vision and planning. Stories of commitment. And ultimately, stories of success.

A fully integrated Mid-Atlantic construction and development firm, where consistent execution at the highest level is the only acceptable standard, it’s how we will advance our world. Solid partnerships are at the beginning of each story—where we begin by listening and understanding goals, from preconstruction to completion and beyond. As we see it, delivering on promises is a key measure to success. For nearly two decades, Hourigan Construction has built a reputation of excellence. With offices in Richmond and Virginia Beach, our expertise runs deep in the following market segments: healthcare, sports & entertainment, military & federal, and design-build. Success for each project is rooted in technology such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), which enhances our collaborative relationship with designers and key engineers to achieve exacting accuracy much earlier in the preconstruction phase of the project.

There’s a lot that goes into building a successful project, and it starts with the people.

One of our project teams recently wrapped up the week with an evening at a local arcade, enjoying some good food and a little friendly competition. It was a chance to step away from the day-to-day, have some fun together, and strengthen the relationships that make working as a team even better.

At Hourigan, we value the time our teams spend together both on and off the job site. Building strong relationships and creating opportunities to connect are an important part of our culture and help build the trust, collaboration, and camaraderie we bring back to work every day.

Construction is progressing on the expansion of this senior and independent living community, including a three-story senior living community center, a one-story memory support center, and four three-story hybrid homes.

Each hybrid home will feature 11 independent living apartments, providing additional opportunities for residents to enjoy independent living within the greater Summit community.

We’re proud to be part of a project designed to create thoughtfully planned spaces that support residents through different stages of life.

As summer comes to a close and kids head back to school, we’re proud to support Backpack Buddies in helping students start the year with new school supplies.

Our Charlottesville office recently came together to pack backpacks filled with school supplies for students in need. For the past 16 years, Backpack Buddies has brought together youth and adult volunteers to provide more than 10,400 backpacks to Virginia students from pre-K through 12th grade.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support an organization doing meaningful work in our communities and to play a small part in helping students start their school year feeling prepared and supported.

Healthcare and life sciences facilities are built for the long term. But the needs they support rarely stay the same.

Patient volumes change. Research priorities evolve. New technologies emerge. Service lines expand.

The challenge in facility planning isn’t predicting exactly what the future will look like. It’s making decisions today that preserve the ability to adapt tomorrow.

That means looking beyond opening day and considering which decisions could be difficult or costly to change later, from structural and MEP infrastructure to exhaust systems, utility capacity, and space planning.

For owners, one question can help frame the conversation:
What decisions are we making today that could make the next project easier, or significantly more difficult?

In our latest blog, we explore how thoughtful planning can help healthcare and life sciences facilities remain flexible as needs evolve.

A milestone worth celebrating!

This project team recently surpassed 100,000 manpower hours without an OSHA recordable incident, and we celebrated by bringing everyone on site together for lunch.

Behind that number are countless decisions made with safety in mind, conversations that helped prevent incidents, and looking out for the person working beside you.

We’re proud to recognize the entire project team and our trade partners for making safety a shared priority.

Following our Hourigan Leader program, we’re continuing the conversation around what it means to lead at Hourigan. This session focused on the Relationship Builder and how we can strengthen relationships with our clients, colleagues, and Trade Partners.

A big part of that conversation centered around trust. Trust is built through ability, benevolence, integrity, and shared values, but it also grows when people are willing to be vulnerable, take risks, share concerns, and bring new ideas to the table.

Creating that kind of environment takes intention. When people feel comfortable speaking openly and challenging one another, teams become stronger, collaboration improves, and better work follows.

From the first schedule to the final detail, collaboration drives our work forward.

Sometimes, that means bringing the field team into the office to work through drawings, schedules, and the details that keep a project on track.

Working together turns plans into reality and ensures what’s planned in the office works in the field.

The connection between people, planning, and ex*****on is what brings a project together.

A closer look at the progress inside the UVA Karsh Institute of Democracy.

With scaffolding throughout the space, crews are working around framing, MEP systems, and the building’s curved architectural elements as construction continues.

Photos like this are a great reminder that a finished space comes together through hundreds of individual pieces, coordinated across many teams and trades. Once complete, the building will serve as a hub for scholarship, teaching, and collaboration around democracy, including a 430-seat auditorium, classrooms, media production space, and collaboration areas.

A new Family Services building is coming to the Henrico Government campus!

Henrico County is partnering with Hourigan and Guernsey Tingle to deliver this new facility, which will provide vital services to families throughout the county. As we prepare for the project, we’re looking to connect with various trades interested in getting involved.

Join us for a Supplier Outreach Event to learn more about the project and opportunities for how your company can get involved. We are looking for Prime Partners, as well as suppliers and 2nd-tier vendors to the Prime Partners.

This warehouse is taking shape using tilt-up construction, which involves casting large concrete wall panels horizontally on-site before using a crane to lift them into their final position. Once the panels are cured and ready to go, an entire building perimeter can be raised in just a matter of days.

For large-scale warehouse projects, this approach offers several advantages, including faster installation, reduced transportation requirements, and cost efficiencies compared with traditional off-site precast construction.

What looks like a simple wall going up is actually a carefully coordinated process involving concrete, reinforcing steel, formwork, foundations, and precision crane operations that all come together to create the building’s structure.
